Run a Large Portfolio of Buildings With the Same Ease as You Hail a Ride

Uber efficiently gets where you need to go. Google tells us how to avoid traffic. Amazon lets you buy in one click. Enterprise-scale building operators deserve the same “modern” ease when it comes to managing their portfolios.

For buildings to run smart with the ease of Uber, Google and Amazon, it takes more than a new coat of paint on building automation systems. It takes a native (new) digital approach to facilites management.

Built like the web giants. Made for buildings.

Our team has spent decades in building automation, but are technologists at heart. We’ve kept one foot in Silicon Valley innovation and the other in HVAC and controls. So, unlike others who may excel in one world but have no experience in the other, Riptide’s team knows what’s needed for both. And, the considerations and technology decisions we’ve made in creating our solutions were done based on a history of deploying thousands of building systems.

A Look at Riptide’s Technology Stack:

While we want Riptide user experience to be simple, we engineer complex systems behind it to be reliable, handle interactions of vastly different equipment, and manage massive amounts of sensor data securely. Our technology stack creates an end-to-end platform to deliver building optimization regardless of what equipment you have.

Edge Layer

Interoperability

You need to work with whatever you’ve got installed. With the diversity of systems, equipment, devices, and vintages, support for different protocols is a necessity. Our stack supports open standards such as BACnet, Modbus, Zigbee, Zwave and a host of proprietary protocols.

Edge Intelligence

Controls 101 is “control logic belongs closest to the end-device.” Riptide’s system can make operational decisions right in the building (not just in the cloud). Our edge software runs on an embedded appliance, and can perform local processing, data logging, control and more.

Data Tagging

There’s little uniformity in naming convention during building commissioning, making it messy. Riptide streamlines data using “tags” (following the Haystack standard) to make your data analytics-ready.

Cloud Layer

Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is the dominant platform for growing internet companies because you can programmatically scale up computing power instantly. So instead of using computing power of a single server, you can run across a fleet of servers in a data center. We run our stack on Google Cloud, and can create private clouds for very large customers.

Big Data and Analytics Engine

BAS systems are very “small data” oriented. Data is discarded, what you trend is limited, and storage of data requires adding more hardware. Riptide’s able to crunch millions of data points and deliver insights in seconds, because instead of throwing data away, we keep all of it in the Cloud. We use noSQL (Cassandra) database as our real-time data management platform.

Machine Learning

Riptide’s a learning system. We keep every data point collected so that we can apply machine learning over time. Our goal is to learn the behavior of the building and equipment, and apply computer science techniques and algorithms to automate the optimization of systems.

Performing Analytics on Normalized Data

Application Layer

Web and Mobile

No client software to download. Uses standard web browsers and the Riptide mobile app.

Notification Driven

Who has time to look at a screen all day? Riptide’s architected to set your rules and deliver how you work – email, text, cell.

Tools

Our application is easy for non-programmers to extend and customize to their needs. Logic Builder allows you to create new logic rules with a drag and drop style tool. Report Builder allows you to mash-up information important to you, and deliver via email in a report.

Riptide End-to-End Security

As ex-Cisco engineers, we take security seriously at Riptide and we are proud to exceed the industry standard when it comes to protecting your organization. Our end-to-end security has passed the security and penetration testing of some of the largest enterprises on the planet.

If you have a BAS, we’re compatible with all the leading platforms and systems.

If you don’t have a BAS, we’ll provide sensors and metering.
